Starting discussions

How do discussions work?

On Complete Twit, everything revolves around discussions — create a discussion and the whole community can get involved by adding their remarks.

Discussions focus on a story, a picture or a video.

Stories
A story may be about something that has happened to you personally, a news item you’ve read in the paper, or perhaps something you saw on a website somewhere.
Pictures
Want to share that photo of you buried on a beach? Or maybe a friend sent you a funny picture that made you laugh so hard you nearly burst! Go ahead and add them to Complete Twit.
Videos
Sharing your videos with the world is becoming increasingly popular using sites like YouTube. We’ve hooked up to some video sites so you can share them here too!

So, how do I start a discussion?

There are three ways to start discussions:

  1. Share your favourite stories (or links), pictures and videos with us using the “Start a discussion” area, which you’ll find on most pages:

Fill out the boxes of the form and when you’re happy with your discussion, post it.

If you need a helping hand while filling out the form, you’ll find a few tips alongside the form.

  2. If you need a jump start, we’ve brought together news items and interesting tidbits from all over the Web to give you some food for thought. Find something that takes your fancy and start a discussion on it.

    It’s really that simple!

  3. The easiest way to start discussions is to use our helpful browser tools.

How do I post a story?

You’ve chosen to discuss a story, but found yourself in a bit of a muddle? Okay — let’s see if we can help you.

  1. Give your story a descriptive title. This should tell people in just a few words what you’re discussing. So, if you want to talk about an item you read in the newspaper, the headline for that item would make a good title for the discussion.

  2. Linking to the source of the story or to a Web page with more information is always good. Take, for example, that item you read in the paper — it may be on the newspaper’s website. Linking to that will let other people read it too! Get more help below with linking to another site.

  3. Choosing a suitable topic for your story is easy — just pick one from the list.

  4. Use the large box to type the main text of a personal story or just a short comment. If your text turns out to be quite long, remember to break it up into paragraphs, making it easier for everyone to read.

Once you’ve finished your story, use the button at the bottom of the form to post your discussion to the site.

How do I link to another site?

If you’ve got a website you want to link from Complete Twit, you need to give us the Web address. To insert a Web address:

  1. Go to the page in your browser, right-click in the address bar and copy the link — they usually start with “http://” and appear in a box at the top of your browser:

  2. …then paste it into the link section of the form:

Linking is made even easier with our browser tools, which will fill in the link for you — the tools even know when you are trying to add a video from one of the supported video services.

How do I add pictures?

So, you’ve got this great picture that you want to add to the site, but you need some help to do it.

  1. Enter a short title for your picture.

  2. Hit the “Browse…” button, find your picture on your computer to add it. Note: If you’re posting one of your own pictures to the site, make sure that it’s the right way up before doing this.

  3. Choosing a suitable topic for your picture is easy — just pick one from the list.

  4. As we like to say, a picture is worth a thousand words, but words can really help! Adding a good description to your picture will make it more interesting!

Once you’ve got your picture just right, use the button at the bottom of the form to post your discussion to the site.

How do I add videos?

It’s easy to post videos to the site from services such as YouTube and Google Video.

  1. Enter a short title for the video — use the existing title if you like.

  2. Insert the Web address of the video. You can copy and paste it as with story links.

  3. Choosing a suitable topic for your video is easy — just pick one from the list.

  4. Add a good description to your video to tell people what it’s about and make it even better!

When you’re done and dusted, use the button at the bottom of the form to post your discussion to the site.

Note: If you have a video file on your computer that you want to add to the site, please read through the answer to the question below.

Can I add a file on my computer to the site?

If a friend has sent you a funny video or an interactive file such as a Powerpoint or Excel file, you’re quite likely to find that it is already online somewhere. Perhaps it’s already on Complete Twit.

If you’ve got a video, try searching for it on sites such as Google Video or YouTube. Try searching for it on Google and link to it in a story.

I’ve been told my video doesn’t look like right.

Complete Twit currently supports YouTube and Google Video. If you have a favourite video sharing website that you would like to use with Complete Twit, let us know and we’ll look into it.
