I couldn’t believe my ears!
I actually heard the man from the Chelmsford Health inspectors saying on Radio 4 that the reason they had not been too 'zealous’ about checking out these reports of appallingly insanitary conditions for transporting meat about, was because companies in the industry did not like them to be 'too thorough' in their investigations… I am completely speechless. I have no doubt that companies like Maclarens that make a habit of carrying raw meat about in filthy vans and then dumping it on the street before expecting the rest of us to pay good money to eat it, would like the Inspectors to go away completely but that is hardly the point. Having given the company ample warning that they were going to turn up, the Inspectors were apparently astonisheded to find only a couple of vans left at the warehouse – oh, what a surprise! What planet are these people on! In the meanwhile if you are going out to dinner tonight, eye your meat suspiciously.
